I am a Sneckner descendant and live in Missouri. My cousin Terri has done some extensive work on our family tree. I am thrilled to have some information about them and to know they were bakers. (Maybe this is why I have a daughter who has told me she wants to be a “Desserts Maker” ) I found you through the Historical Society post Fourpundsflour.com featuring the recipe book of Maria Sneckner Lintz. Ah – that’s the word I was looking for, Renata – BONFIRE. Sendak wasn’t satisfied with a crackling little campfire fed by twigs. He threw logs on it and made it roar. And I am so grateful – for his stories and his example!

I love how you’ve linked into the ethos and timeliness of Superman. Having read 70 years of Superman strips for my thesis years ago, I appreciate how much Superman represented the possibility of triumph for all in the struggles of the day.

And I really adore the idea of marking time in a recent family history against what Superman was doing that day! WWSD? (What Was Superman Doing?)

Ah, pipes! I don’t smell those so much any more – but I remember liking that smell way more than the smell of cigars. As for heaping plates o’ food – the older I get, the more I realize that food is love for so many people, especially grandmothers!

I don’t remember much about either of my grandmother’s home. They died when I was under ten years old and I really don’t have a good memory of when I was young.

What I can remember about being over my grandmother’s house is the smell of dinner and the smell of my grandfather’s smoking room (pipes). At least when the door to the room was opened, which I don’t recall happening a lot. When dinner came, my grandmother would go around and asked who wanted more. If you said “no thanks” you’d only get a little bit more. If you said yes, well let’s just say you didn’t go hungry.
